KATHERINE AUSTIN | PIANIST
Head of Piano Studies for the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music, Katherine Austin is one of New Zealand’s leading pianists and performs regularly around New Zealand and overseas, touring frequently for Chamber Music New Zealand, and broadcasting regularly on Radio New Zealand Concert. Katherine graduated Master of Music with First Class Honours in Piano Performance from Auckland University. In 1982 she won both the TVNZ/NZSO New Zealand Young Musician of the Year, playing Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Young Performer of the Year (PACANZ). Seven years of study and performance in London and Europe followed, included a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music London. In 1987, Katherine won the Top Duo Prize in the Stresa International Chamber Music Competition in Italy, performing with cellist Vincenzo Giuliani. Katherine has performed Romantic piano concerto repertoire with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and has been guest on a number of occasions as concerto soloist with the Auckland Chamber Orchestra and Opus Orchestra, specializing in the concertos of Mozart and Beethoven. She is also the coordinator behind the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts’ successful ongoing concert series and the producer for the numerous University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music concerts in the central North Island, New Zealand. From their piano studies at the University of Waikato, Katherine’s students have excelled, winning scholarships to study in Germany, Vienna, London, and at the Australian National Academy of Music. In addition to the recordings released with the NZCS, Katherine has released two CDs on the Atoll label, one with great Russian Sonatas for Cello and Piano, the other “Diable Vert”, performing virtuoso and romantic duo works, with international cello sensation Santiago Canon Valencia, to critical acclaim. |
MARK BANNETT| VIOLINST
Mark Bennett studied violin at The University of Auckland under David Nalden. While there he won a number of prizes and then secured a full scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At the Royal Academy he studied with renowned English violinist and leader of the Aolian String Quartet, Emanuel Hurwitz, and Tchaikovsky Silver medal winner Xue-Wei. He is grateful to Mainzeal Foundation , Butland Foundation and also the Fisher Trust who all helped with study scholarships. Following his study Mark embarked on a freelance career in London working with many of the London Orchestras, and touring Europe and Asia with them. Mark returned to New Zealand to take up a position with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO). He has worked as a guest orchestral leader for many orchestras in the Auckland and Waikato region and has had many years experience conducting string ensembles to successes in NZ and abroad. Mark has significant experience in teaching both violin and viola. He worked for many years as an Artist Teacher at School of Music UoA before taking up the position of Professional Teaching Fellow (Violin) in 2021.
